Breezy Tuesday

Hi, Everyone,

Today was a cool and breezy Tuesday.  I'm feeling great.   It's getting late now, but I wanted blog anyway, so I could share some pics with you I got from my sister, Heather.  We met for lunch to have a "council" about the bridal shawl.  I bound off the straight edge with no beads and I am working on the curved one, which will have beads.  Heather is working on the bead clusters.

This is a silly hat Heather and I were working on in Mountain view.  We just could not get it right even though we remodeled it various times.

This is the bride and groom.  Don't you think Shannon will look great in the bridal shawl I'm knitting?

My niece Byrnna and her son very involved in his video game.

I just loved the architecture of the Santa Barbara train station.

Brad and Shannon playing with his hats.  Brad looks more and more like my dad every day.

Lilo is outside stalking gophers.

Anyone for a light appetizer, perhaps a gopher?

Hi, Everyone,

The sun is out and it was earlier, too.  In between we had a little rain shower.  Normal weather in most parts of the country, but odd for San Diego.  Breezy Monday afternoon, I am in good health and feeling great about life.

Well, last night when we got home around 9 pm, Lilo was sitting in the middle of the living room floor, starting to eat a gopher.

While I'm glad she learned how to catch them, and I hope for the sake of the lawn she will eventually catch then all, I am not so crazy about her choice of a place to eat it.  Dan tossed it out the front door with a napkin, then I picked it up with disposable chop sticks and took it out on the porch.

Here it is on the toe of my swimming shoe, so you can see the size of it.  Then I threw it out onto the lawn, where Lilo finished eating it.   She was very pleased with herself.  Tiny, dainty Lilo casts herself as the great white hunter!  Of gophers!

We had just gotten back from dinner.  Pizza with Dare.  I'm just a kid at heart.  I love pizza,  -  good, crunchy crust under gooey, cheesy, meaty, garlicy pizza toppings.    Fresh, hot bread sticks are also not bad.  Bad for my weight, but I love 'em.  Fresh, crispy salad, BBQ chicken and a size of pasta in marinera sauce.  What's not to like?  We get one of those family combos and share it.  Yum-o.

Here I am working on the bridal shawl after dinner at Pat and Oscars.  I have on my regular glasses, yeah, found 'em.  That was a little crazy for a day with "backup" glasses that are not quite strong enough.   I could see the TV, but not good enough to read.  Knitting lace was a real strain   Big Relief to find them!  Knitting tiny white lace with "backup" glasses really defines me as a crazy, obsessed knitter, LOL.

I am about 1/2 of the way done with the edging lace for the straight edge.  Then I will tackle the long, curved edge.  Heather and I have been consulting about the best way to add the beads to the edge.   She is busy constructing the cystal, silver, plum and violet bead dangles for the points of the lace.   Maybe 70 points when all is said and done.   I think we will need to consult when I get to the bind off row and maybe make a swatch and try a few things to see what looks best.   I'll keep you posted.   Getting close.  Dan says I need to make another one to keep when I finish this one...?  Hmmmmm ...?  Lots of stitches.......... Would love to have one...... We'll see.

 Bye,
Julie

Doc in an RV

Hello Everyone,

It's a cool, breezy  Sunday afternoon.  Today was breezy, foggy and cool.  I'm feeling good.

I just found this great pic of Nate from Halloween.  He just loves Minnie Mouse.

This last week he was staying with me and I had a doctor's appointment.  Since I do not have medical insurance, I have had to come up with some creative ways to get inexpensive medical care.  The clinic (Dan found it for me online, gotta love him) handles ongoing prescriptions thusly: you make an appointment with their mobile unit on the day it is in your neighborhood, the mobile unit PA checks your chart for the doctor's instructions and writes your prescription and then the main clinic pharmacy fills it, you pick it up the next business day after you turn it in.  4 stops a month to continue an ongoing prescription (not counting the actual doctor's visit), but it is very low cost and works for me.   So I was visiting the "Mobile unit"that day,  what Dan and I lovingly call the "Doc in an RV" which was parked in our local park for the day.   Patients were lined up on folding chairs in the park, enjoying the sunshine and fresh air.

Nate asked, "Gramma, what are we doing here?"
"Waiting to see my doctor", I replied.
Nate, pointing to the RV door in disbelief, "Your doctor is in there?"
"I'll bet your doctor doesn't come to see you in such a cool truck like mine does", I replied. "And they even have this great playground for you to use while Gramma sees the doctor."
The doc heard me and laughed so hard I thought she was going to pee her pants.

Hey, it works!

I am working the edging lace on the bridal shawl.  I'm working the lace edging in 2 sections: first one for the top straight edge, and another for the semi-circular side.  The shawl will look like capital letter D.

I picked up all the stitches, then I did a couple of rows of garter, then a couple rows stockinette, just to give it a good base.   Now I'm 5 rows into the lace. OK, time to count stitches.

Lilo climbed into the sweater drawer and is napping there, snug and warm in the middle of my sweaters.  And I sometimes wonder why my sweaters are all covered in white cat hair.

Gotta go, dinner with Dare tonight.

Bye,
Julie

Filling a pool?

Hi,  Everybody,

I feel good, like James Brown.  Today was lovely and warm, the perfect spring Saturday after starting out a bit cool in the morning.   Now in the early evening the fog is drifting in.   It'll probably be cool again tonight like it was last night, from the fog.

Nate went home today, end of spring break with Gramma. Here we are keeping warm and watching a Star Trek movie together.  I'm knitting, of course.  This is my take on the Storm Cloud Shawlette from Ravelry.  I'm using size 6 needles and 2 strands of bedspread weight mercerized cotton, so it's shiny and silky and will adjust its shape easily as I pull on it to wear it.  I'm  mixing various colors as I use up stash.   Pink glitter, a mostly pinks multi, a soft salmon,  lilac and violet.  It is lightest at the top and moves darker and it works its way down.   I think it is going to be great for summer.   More a summer cover up and not so much for warmth.

The bridal shawl is coming along, the center section is done.  I have begun picking up the border stitches all along the edge.  This is no small matter.  I'll count them all when I get done but I'm guessing maybe 600 stitches or so.

Anybody want to guess how many stitches I end up with on the edging?  I know, can't tell much about lace until it is blocked...

Dan just handed me a very yummy quesadilla.  We recently found this little Mexican market not too far from the house that makes it's own home-made looking thick and grainy corn tortillas.  When you get them they are still hot from the press and taste like corny heaven.  So....  Heat that up on the griddle with some very sharp cheddar cheese folded inside, wow,  is that good or what?  I think I'll keep him....

Lilo is hoping for a taste of the cheese, so she is on her very best adorable-sweet-pretty-white-kitty behavior.  I am not fooled, but I'll probably give her some cheese anyway.

Heather and I were talking a few minutes ago and I used an expression that reminded me of something that happened a couple of years ago.  I was thinking about buying a house, but the prices were so crazy at the time, that I decided not to.  Turned out to be a good idea as the loans offered then were all ARM's and the market crashed shortly thereafter.  I would have lost it.   But for a while I was looking at houses.  So one house I looked at was in Serra Mesa and it was in pretty sad shape, lost of water damage and mildew everywhere.  Selling "as is".   There was a big swimming pool that had been built tight up against the house in back and it was pretty clear to me that the pool was leaking underground.  The homeowners had emptied the pool to stop the water damage from pool water leaking into the house, good idea, LOL.  But the realtor was determined that it is a bad idea to show a house with an empty pool.  So he was trying to fill the pool up with a slender garden hose.  This was not working so good, as the leaks were emptying it at about the same rate as the hose was filling it, so after several days of running the hose the pool only had maybe 18 inches of water in it and the moisture was dripping everywhere in the house.  The agent was complaining that filling a pool with a garden hose takes forever.  Ya think!   Especially a leaking pool.  So, "like filling a pool with a garden hose" has become an expression of wrong headed futility between Dan and me.

See ya,
Julie

In the shadow of Torry Pines

Hi, Everyone,

Today was a beautiful, sunny Thursday.  So pretty I can't believe it. Now the sun is setting and it is just as pretty in a moody, twilight sort of way.  I feel good.

Heather and I went on our usual Artho-swim class this morning.  Nate came along and splashed around with us.  He had fun swimming in the very warm pool.

Then we met Dan's mom and sister and niece for lunch at Iris Food and Spirits in Del Mar, on Carmel Valley Road,  right next to the wetlands, where you can watch water birds and look up the hill at the Torry pines. http://www.irisfoodandspirits.com/  It was lovely.   Sunny and bright, nice breeze on the patio.  Rustic timbers, pretty wildflowers in the entry garden, crisp white tablecloths.

Heather gave Anita this pretty white and purple cotton  hat with sparkling beads she had crocheted for her birthday.  It'll be nice this summer.

Nate enjoyed his lunch, especially the rolls, freshly baked with rosemary and slathered in sweet cream butter.

Dan had the crab cake sandwich, one of his favs.  I had the buttermilk chicken salad.  It was good. The duck/fig/gorgonzola pizza appetizer was really great

Here he is enjoying the fresh bread.

On the knitting front, I was busy knitting on the bridal shawl, it's coming along.  I just can't wait to block it.  I'm also working on a Storm Cloud Shawlette in some old (fifties) cotton a friend gave me when she "retired" from knitting.  I saw Zorla's (Ravelry) version at the knitting guild last night and couldn't resist starting my own.  Since I ripped a going-nowhere project to get the cotton, I'm counting this a finishing a UFO.  Finishing it as a whole new thing, LOL.  I have to do something else to take a break from the bridal shawl so I don't hurt my hands with the many small stitches.

The spring weather has brought out lots of gophers in the lawn, so Lilo is outside trying to figure out how to catch them.  Our old cat, Tiffy, was a gopher expert, but Lilo is just getting the idea.  Nathan is on the porch supervising and giving her advice.

See ya,
Julie

Remembering Santa Barbara

Hello, Everyone,

It's a lovely Spring Wednesday afternoon.  Warm, balmy breezes, birds chirping.   I'm feeling ok.

I stopped for a day in Santa Barbara on my way back form the San Francisco Bay area recently, but I am just now getting around to blogging about it.  Santa Barbara is a very beautiful place.  Sparkling clean, built on a pretty bay, hillsides behind covered in spring wild flowers.  Pretty, touristy town.

In the evening we went to the Crocodile Cafe in the Lemon Tree Inn, a "local secret" place with great modern food and reasonable prices,  http://www.treeinns.com/dining.htm .

Heather had rosemary chicken:fresh chicken breast smothered in a creamy rosemary lemon sauce with grilled fresh veggies, a green salad and a baked potato.  It was wonderful, the chicken was moist and tender and the sauce was great. The grilled veggies were tasty

I had the pork chops in a mango sauce, garlic mashed and grilled veggies.  Also excellent.

For desert we split a Coconut Cake.  Now I get the fuss over Coconut cake: this is what it is supposed to taste like.   Moist, creamy, full of freshly grated coconut, frosting not overly sweet. Great!  I'd go there again in a heartbeat.

Service was friendly and prompt.

The next day we took a cab to the train station and then the 25 cent shuttle downtown along State Street.  There was a snake rescue group showing off some boas and fund raising for their non-profit snake rescue.

Sorry about the funny lighting.  They were in cool, dark shade to keep the snakes cool, therefore slow moving and easy to handle. Good for snake handling, bad for photos.

The sweet-natured boa around MY neck.  No foo-foo yarn and big needles involved in this boa, LOL.

Notice the cool shades I'm wearing, bought on State Street from a sidewalk vendor for $10, lots of rhinestones at the temples, very me.

We also stopped at So Good Collections, a shop of nothing but sparkly things, mostly accessories, www.sogoodcollections.com .   I wanted to buy the whole shop, but settled for one bracelet.

And then the Peace Store,  where they play old Beatles albums and all their products have a peace theme.  I bought a pink fountain pen, which I filled with pink ink as soon as I got home.

We had lunch at the Enterprise Fish Company, http://santabarbara.enterprisefishco.com/fishco.html .   We split a chicken quesadilla off the appetizer menu, it was that big.  I washed it down with a Humbolt Hemp Ale, which claims to have actual hemp seeds mixed in with the barley as it's brewed.  No effect, normal dark ale, just marketing, I think, LOL.  The handsome boys working the bar recommended it.

On the train ride back, 2 times we had extended stops for "monkey business".    In Guadalupe the train did a panic stop, nobody was hurt on the train, just a jolting, screeching stop.  3 young girls were playing "chicken" with the train.  They stood on the tracks until the train came very close, then jumped off to the side.  The one to stay on the tracks the longest "wins" the game, I guess.   The conductor knows they will jump off, and that he can't stop in time anyway (it takes forever to stop a train) but he must hit the "emergency brake" button by law.  Sooo,  he does and they laugh at him from the side of the tracks.

The train can damage its brakes with a panic brake, so they have to get out and walk the length of the train, testing the brakes at each axle by pushing a button and then waiting 20 seconds or so to see if a red or a green bulb lights up.  On a short train like this, it takes 'bout 30-40 minutes.  The train folks were really mad.  They called the cops to report it when it happened, and the cops called back later during the brake test to say that they caught the girls when they tried to leave the RR right of way, took therm to the local hoosgow and called their parents to come pick them up.  When the conductor told us, the retired school teacher in front of me called out, " I'd bet my next monthly check that they're 8th graders!   That's 8th graders for you. "   He had been correctly identifying the grade of the kids in the car before they told him anything.   Knows kids...  I remember 8th grade, crazy time for sure.   I knew kids in school like that.   All they have to do is trip once when they're on the tracks...  I sure hope the girls understand now.

Then, further south  in Ventura,  a white pickup truck broke through the wooden barrier arm at a protected crossing  to "beat" the train across, triggering another "emergency stop" and another 30 minute brake inspection.   He made it across ok, so that's good.   But he drove off scot free, they couldn't see a license plate in time.   So the cops had nothing to go on.   The crossing was broken and had to be repaired muy pronto as it was an unprotected crossing until the repair could be made.   The train folks had steam coming out of their ears.  But we made up the time, as the freight train we were scheduled to wait for was not running that day and we did not have to sit and wait for it on the siding.  Along the central California coast, there is a section where Amtrak pays a local freight line for  the rights to use their tracks, but the freight trains have priority.  After all, it's their track.  Funny to see the sleek, modern Amtrak waiting for the rusty ol' freighter to chug by.

So all ended well in spite of a few "crazies".   What a world this is.  What are people thinking?

Knitting club was tonight.  Lots of fun.  Took Nate and the girls adored him.

Lilo sez, "adieu" to her adoring fans.  Simple life, she knows she is so beautiful.  Spoiled rotten... Sigh... Silly cat.

Today I attended a memorial service for the son of a friend who died in his mid-thirties of a sudden, unexpected, massive brain hemorrage.  Athletic surfer kid, gone just like that  in under 24 hours.  So sudden and unexpected.  Wow.  Hug your honey and tell 'em you love 'em.  You never know how long they, or you, have.

See ya,
Julie

Hot soup on a cold night

Hello, Everyone,
Well, it is cold windy rainy Monday night after a day of off and on wind and  rain. I'm feeling pretty good, having just eaten the last of the chocolate Easter bunnies.  Ears first, of course.

Heather made this hat for a friend, but I tried it on for size.
I like the bobbles.

This afternoon I decided what a rainy day needs is a hot winter soup, never mind that this is supposed to be spring. This turned out great: tasty and warming.

Mission Bay Russian  Soup

In a slow cooker put:
1 big Kielbasa, 1 pound, cut into big chunks
1 quart water
1 bunch green onions or 1 medium onion, chopped coarsely
3 small potatoes. peeled and sliced
1 heart of celery, trimmed and cut into chunks
2 big carrots, sliced
8 oz sliced mushrooms
1 tsp black pepper
1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
1 minced clove of garlic
1/4 tsp thyme
1 tsp oregano
2 bay leaves
salt to taste
Cook 4 hours on low.  Taste and adjust salt (a lot depends on how salty the Kielbasa was, and they vary)  With a potato masher mush up the soup a bit, but do not over mush.  Leave mostly chunks.   The potato will thicken the broth.
In each bowl put a small pat of butter and 1/4 cup of plain yoghurt.  Pour over ladles of hot soup and stir.  Yummy.

Lilo came in out of the rain and wants to play fight with me.  Silly kitty.

Goodnight,
Julie

Happy Easter

Hello, Everyone,

Its a chilly Easter Sunday evening following a warm spring day, breezy and sunny.   Good day for a kite.

I got some photos from the Encinitas Community Egg hunt.

Here I am sitting on my knitting stool at the entrance waiting for Nate.  Unlike Godot, he came.

Here I am sitting beside the egg hunt field knitting on the bridal lace while Nate shows off his winnings.  Isn't his shirt great.  Among the hordes of kids he was easy to pick out in that distinctive and bright shirt.

Ready, set...   All those dots on the green field are plastic eggs with a prize inside (sticker, jumpy frog, toy ring, etc.)

Looking over at Gramma knitting on the sidelines.

His favorite treasures from inside the eggs are these beautiful rings.

Crawling into the jumpy thing, the jump house.  He had a great time jumping.   Perfect for a six year old with a lot of energy.  They had several of these and separated the kids by age.   What a good idea!

And for your musical entertainment, the singing clown... Which works about as well as you can imagine.  Neither great singing, nor terribly funny, but somehow entertaining just the same.  I must have been in an easy to please mood.

More jumping.

There were many beautiful little princesses running around  in pretty Easter dresses.

After the jumping was over, lunch was in order, so we headed out to the 101 Diner, which I blogged previously.  Yum!

This afternoon I visited my friend Flore, and she gave me a lovely picture frame necklace.   Framed therein are the words "Winter ALWAYS Turns to Spring".   What a lovely gift!   While we were chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo the earthquake occurred in nearby Northern Mexico.   There were several aftershocks, so it seemed to rock and roll forever.   Dan called and joked, "Wow! You girls must be chanting some amazing Daimoku!   The earth moved."   Well, yes, but not like that, Honey, LOL.

Tonight we had a lovely dinner with Anita and her friend.   Anita is a masterful salad maker.  And the shrimp and pasta dish was yummy.  The raspberry torte was good, too.  Later Steve's family stopped by, and Amber, too.   Here is me at Anita's and you can see the progress I am making on the bridal shawl.

Hope you had a nice spring day,
Julie

Happy Day Before Easter

Hello, Everyone,

Saturday was clear and windy and warm.  We took Nathan to a community egg hunt in Encinitas.  He had fun and ran around with a bajillion other little kids.  I'll post on the egg hunt event next time when I get the pics downloaded.  We went to the 101 Diner in Encinitas for lunch, http://www.101diner.com/.

Amber ordered a side salad and the result was awesome.

Some side salad.
This was my Chicken Machaca Omlette, and it was pretty tasty.

These are Heather's blintzes stuffed with fruit.  Even the coffee was good.  Nate's children's burger was awesome, too.  Then Steve went and played some golf with old friends while Nate and  I sat on the terrace at the golf course in the sunshine and  I knit on the bridal shawl.  Sooo,  altogether a very successful outing.
Lilo sez, Goodnight.

See ya soon,

Pizza

Hi, Everyone,

It's Thursday night, cool (55) and clear.  I went artho-swimming with Heather today in Clairemont, so I'm feeling pretty good.   After the swim Dan and I were looking for a cheap and quick and good lunch.  I had picked up a 2-fer coupon for Joe's Pizza, 5583 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, http://joespizzasd.com, so we stopped by there.  We had a really nice time.   Super nice people, good salad bar, Sobe included on the fountain drinks (yeah).   Beer if you want it.   The pizza bar had good thin crust New York style pizza, lots of choices, fresh, hot.    All you can eat for $8 weekday lunch, and some other times.  Nice, friendly local joint.  I recommend it if you are in the area.  I'll have to bring Mr. Pizza (Nathan) next week when he comes to visit.  I'm a kid at heart, I guess, but I love pizza, too.    Sorry, no pics of Joe's  this time.

But here is one of Nate on a previous pizza adventure. It's his fav.

This evening I attended a meeting in the neighborhood of Claire de Lune, so I was waiting for Dan there after the meeting over decaf and cookies.   Full of kids, comfy chairs, kind of fun, but loud.  It's a little dark for lace knitting, but I got a few rows done.

Dark lace knitting in Claire's.

I really appreciate Dan who tirelessly transports me in the cooler months when I can't drive.

On the knitting front, it's lace, lace, lace and nupps, nupps, nupps.

Lilo hated the rain last night, so she kept jumping up on the bed and poking me awake to tell me about it.  Like maybe 10 times.  Tonight I am getting a good night's sleep if she has to sleep in the living room.  Lilo's evicted from the bedroom for tonight.  She's asleep on the bed right now, so obviously she didn't get the memo.  Yet.

Good night,
Julie
